Latin American Popular Music on Saxophone
(Priscilla will sing 2 Brazilian songs)
Please join us on Friday, April 25th as the Archives of Traditional Music presents a recital of Latin American popular music from diverse styles and regions by saxophonist Ricardo Martínez. This program will give the audience a glimpse of not only the wealth of Latin America’s popular traditions, but also the versatility of saxophone in Latin music.
Ricardo began his studies under renowned saxophonist Eugene Rousseau at the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities and has also studied abroad in France with Philippe Braquart at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Montpellier and Jean-Yves Fourmeau at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Cergy-Pontoise, where he played as a soloist for some ensembles, and obtained high distinctions in saxophone and chamber music. As a chamber musician he has taken part in world premieres by French composers Denis Badault, Sophie Lacaze, and also Robert Lemay, as part of several saxophone ensembles.
At Indiana University, Ricardo has been involved with the Latin American Music Center, researching music written for saxophone by Latin American composers. His interest in the intersection between academic and folkloric music has led him to perform with Grammy Award winning artists Adam Del Monte and Gonzalo Grau as part of the Latin American Popular Music Ensemble. His interest in folkloric music has also led him to perform with a new Brazilian chamber music ensemble that explores the diverse musical genres of Brazil through performance. In continuity with that experience, Ricardo will perform a set of popular Latin American music from several regions, both as a soloist and with accompanied by Priscilla Borges on vocals, Bruno Cabrera on percussion, Alex Macias on guitar, and Rafael Soares on vocals.
